Women's Tennis Kicks Off Spring Season At Georgia Invitational

The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off the 2001 spring season at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga., this weekend.

Junior transfer Debbi Reynolds won her first two matches as a Yellow Jacket, defeating Georgia’s Alexandra Smith, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round and Lauren Rookledge of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (6), in the second round. Reynold’s run through the tournament came to an end in the third round, as she fell to Alena Jecminkova of Kansas State, 3-6, 3-6.

Tech sophomores Jaime Wong and Mason Miller also earned victories in their first tournament of the spring season. Wong defeated Shannon Stafford of Kentucky, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, before falling to Mississippi State’s Amelie Detriviere, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3). Miller defeated Georgia State’s Karin Etienne , 6-4, 6-1, in a consolation match after falling to Illinois, Eldina Fazlic, 0-6, 0-6, in the first round.

In doubles play, Wong and Miller fell to the Kentucky team of Jill Buckley and Leigh Bradwell, 8-9 (2).

Play continues tomorrow with the championship matches on Monday.
