Women's Tennis Falls to No. 4 Vanderbilt, 6-1

March 19, 2004

Kelly Anderson recorded Georgia Tech’s only victory on the day as the No. 4 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team defeated the Yellow Jackets 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. With the win, the Commodores improve to 14-2 on the season while Georgia Tech falls to 8-5 this year.

“I give Vanderbilt a ton of credit today,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “They came out and had very few unforced errors and didn’t give us anything today. They played extremely well by just being controlled and solid and I have to hand it to them. Hopefully our team will come our tomorrow and get a win against Furman so we can get this losing taste out of our mouth.”

The Jackets struggled from the start of the match, dropping all three lines of doubles. The afternoon started with the #27 tandem of Audra Falk and Annie Menees blanking Lyndsay Shosho and Lindsey Stauss, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles. Vanderbilt then clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3 doubles as Amanda Fish and Ashley Schellhas combined to defeat Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio, 8-5. The Commodores then completed the sweep as Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant fell to the third-ranked duo of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos, 8-6.

Tech continued to struggle in singles play as the Jackets fell in five of the six matches. At No. 1 singles, No. 62 Shosho fell to No. 27 Falk, 6-4, 6-0 while at No. 3 singles, Alison Silverio was defeated by No. 69 Schmandt, 7-5, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, Stauss fell to No. 80 Fish in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 while at No. 5 singles Grant fell to Schellhas in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 and Anson fell to Menees, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. In the Jackets only win, Anderson defeated Tsoubanos 6-3, 6-3 marking the ninth consecutive singles victory in dual match action this season.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action when they host Furman in a match that is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
