Women's Hoops Falls To Maryland, 81-70, In OT

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland used an all-out overtime effort to pull past Georgia Tech Thursday night, 81-70, in overtime in women’s basketball action at Cole Field House. Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) led all scorers with 21 points, while Terri Daniels (Ellicott City, Md.) earned a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Maryland is now 12-13 (4-9 ACC) while Georgia Tech falls to 14-10 (7-7 ACC).

Georgia Tech jumped out on an 8-0 run and held a commanding lead through the 15-minute mark before Maryland woke up and eventually pulled ahead by two points with five minutes remaining in the first half. Georgia Tech pulled ahead again, but Maryland finished out the first half by going the length of the floor in 1.4 seconds to draw the Terps within three points at halftime, 31-28.

The second half saw nine lead changes and six ties ultimately ending in a deadlock at 61 when the horn sounded to end regulation. Tech’s Fallen Stokes launched a 17-point effort in the second half to pace the Yellow Jackets. She ended the night with a career-high 32 points.

In the overtime it was all Maryland from beginning to end, featuring a balanced Terrapin attacked lead by Warley, who had six points, and Daniels, who netted five. The Terps began the extra period with a 9-0 run and never let the Yellow Jackets closer than seven points.

For Georgia Tech, Sonia Mallory ended with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double and added four blocks. Milli Martinez had five steals to go with her 10 points in the losing effort.

Terrapin redshirt-sophomore Vicki Brick (Timonium, Md.) pitched in a solid effort off the bench with 12 points and six assists. Georgia Tech owned the boards with a 44-30 advantage, but it was Maryland who ruled points off turnovers, netting 34 to Georgia Tech’s 18 while causing 18 steals. Brick accumulated eight steals, while Jamecca Harrell (Oxon Hill, Md.) swatted away five Tech shots.
