ATLANTA – Senior James Lemons II won the men’s triple jump to lead host Georgia Tech on the final day of the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at the George C. Griffin Track on the Georgia Tech campus.
The Yellow Jacket men’s team placed seventh at the ACC meet with 66 points. Florida State earned its fourth straight ACC Championship after scoring 141 points. The Georgia Tech women’s team ended the day in sixth place with 40 points. Virginia Tech earned its second straight women’s ACC Championship with 172 points.
Lemons earned his second straight ACC outdoor triple jump championship with his personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 53 feet, 6 ½ inches. Lemons’ mark is good for third-best in the nation. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan landed in second place with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 52 feet, 8 inches. Jordan’s mark is the seventh-best in the nation.
On the women’s side, senior Shantia Moss finished the 100-meter hurdles in third place with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.09. Moss finished with the sixth-best time in the NCAA’s and earned her fourth career All-ACC honor in the 100m hurdles.
Sophomore Steve Marcelle placed fourth in the men’s discus with a mark of 167 feet, 10 inches to earn five more points for the men’s squad.
The women’s 4×100-meter relay team featuring Moss, Jenae Anderson, Jacqua Williams and Taylor Davidson placed fifth with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 45.44. In the men’s 4×100-meter relay, Tech’s foursome of Jordan, Lemons, Joe DiDia and Matt DiDia placed eighth with a season-best time of 41.10.
Junior E.C. Gibbs placed fourth in the men’s 1500-meter run final with a time of 3:49.04. Senior David Herren crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 3:51.54 to earn a point for the Jackets. In the women’s 1500m run, senior Jenny Sims crossed the line sixth with a season-best time of 4:28.49.
Jordan, competing in his third event of the day, placed fourth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.69.
Senior Derek Hoye placed seventh in the men’s 400-meter dash behind a time of 47.68 to earn two points for Tech. Also placing seventh was sophomore Billy Mateker, who finished the 800-meter run in a time of 1:53.81.
Junior Mario Johnson clocked a new personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 51.86 in the men’s 400-meter hurdles for a fourth-place finish. In the women’s 400m hurdles, freshman Leslie Njoku finished sixth with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 59.05.
In the men’s 5,000-meter run, senior Nazar Trilisky clocked a team season-best and personal-best time of 14:47.23 for a 14th-place finish.
The men’s 4×400-meter relay team made up of Hoye, Subbu Sivanesan, Matt DiDia and Hunter Clasen finished in sixth place with a season-best time of 3:10.07, just missing an NCAA Regional qualifying mark by .07 seconds. The Tech women’s team of Kayla McKeirnan, Amanda Montgomery, Tiffany Grant and Njoku won its section and finished in fourth place with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 3:41.45.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action next Thursday-Saturday, April 24-26 at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
