Wilson Named Tech's Assistant Swimming Coach

Oct. 8, 2002

ATLANTA – Stuart Wilson, formerly of the highly-regarded club team Swim Atlanta, joins the Georgia Tech swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach, Yellow Jacket head coach Seth Baron announced Tuesday.

According to Baron, Wilson’s duties will include on-deck coaching, primarily with the Tech’s distance swimmers, as well as recruiting for both the men’s and women’s teams. In addition, Wilson will assist the head coach with the design of weight and dryland training programs for the team.

“We are extremely excited to have Stuart join our coaching staff,” Baron said. “While coaching at Swim Atlanta, he has developed swimmers at the highest level and will bring new and innovative ideas to our program.”

Wilson, who has been with Swim Atlanta since 1990, served as the team’s Head Senior Coach since 1998. In this position, he planned and implemented strength and conditioning programs for swimmers age 13 and over. He also handled administrative duties, including fundraising, travel arrangements, compiling a newsletter and keeping track of all team records. He worked as a head age group coach with Swim Atlanta from 1990-98.

Wilson coached Amanda Weir of Swim Atlanta to national age-group records (11-12 and 13-14) in the 50 free. Additionally, he has coached over 50 national top-16 age-group performances.

“Stuart is well-respected in the Atlanta swimming community and throughout the United States,” Baron said. “We know he will bring an added dimension to our recruiting throughout Atlanta, the state of Georgia and the United States.”

Prior to joining Swim Atlanta, Wilson competed at the University of Georgia from 1984-88, reaching the finals of the SEC Championships in the 200 and 500 free in each of his last three seasons. Wilson was a NCAA qualifier in the 400 free relay and held the Bulldog record in the 200 free at one time. Wilson also qualified for U.S. Nationals in his final six seasons of competitive swimming.

Wilson graduated from Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1989.
