GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Whitney Humphreys has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. A native of Shady Spring, W. Va., Humphreys went 3-0 in the circle last week as the Yellow Jackets were 4-1 with two wins apiece over No. 17/19 Georgia and Florida State.
Humphreys allowed eight earned runs on 26 hits and four walks in 24 innings pitched with nine strikeouts during Tech’s first winning week of the season. She began the week with a complete-game win against Georgia, helping the Jackets sweep the 17th-ranked Bulldogs for the second straight season. She then won two games over the weekend at Florida State as Tech picked up its first ACC series win of the year.
Humphreys’ victory on Saturday against the Seminoles was the 59th of her career moving her into sole possession of second place on the all-time Georgia Tech wins list. Her only blemish in a 6-2 win over FSU Sunday was a two-run home run in the seventh inning. After stranding two Seminoles in each of the first three innings Sunday, Humphreys retired nine in a row at one point late in the game and 12 of the final 15 batters.
For the season, Humphreys has been Tech’s work horse as she has pitched in 152.2 innings. She is 11-13 with a 2.16 ERA and .231 opponent’s batting average.
Humphreys and the Yellow Jackets will be back in action with a doubleheader at Georgia Southern on Wednesday. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m. and live stats will be available via the Gametracker link at www.ramblinwreck.com.
