White Wins Annual Gold/White Scrimmage, 3-1

Aug. 19, 2017

THE FLATS – In the first showing of the 2017 Georgia Tech volleyball squad, White topped Gold, 3-1, in the annual Gold and White Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon in O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Head coach Michelle Collier says:

“I thought it went well. It was good to get out here and put ourselves in a position to have to play with a little more pressure. I think they responded well, they played hard. There are still a lot of things that we need to get better at in a short period of time but I thought that the effort was there.”

How it happened:

White pocketed the first set, 25-23, led by sophomore Kodie Comby who had seven kills, hitting at a .750 clip. Gabriela Stavnetchei contributed with four kills for White. For Gold, both Ashley Askin and alumna Annika Van Gunst threw down four kills.

Gold responded in the second set coming out of the gate to a 13-4 lead but White wasn’t going to go down easily. A 6-1 run brought White back in within three at 24-21 but Gold came out on top with a kill from freshman Cori Clifton.

The third set went to White by a score of 25-22, giving it the 2-1 edge. Van Gunst sent home seven kills for White while Stavnetchei tallied six for Gold. Freshman Alessia Del Romano sealed the set for White with her third kill of the set.

Gold came out to an early lead in the fourth and final set, leading by as much as 18-10. White responded with Van Gunst at the service line, tallying six unanswered points to bring the set to 18-17. An attack error from Stavnetchei tied the set at 19-19. The two sides traded points but White took the set and the match at 27-25.
