THE FLATS – Freshman Tristin English drove in three of the team’s four runs and the White Team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first and took the decisive game of the 2016 #WGSERIES with a 4-2 win at Russ Chandler Stadium on Tuesday.
English, a rookie from Williamson, Ga., finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI. He ripped a two-run single up the middle in the first inning that made it 3-0 and his RBI single to right in the third made it 4-1. English was a team-best 5-for-9 (.556) in the series with six RBI and two runs.
That was all the White Team could muster off the Gold pitchers, but it was enough. Sophomore RHP Patrick Wiseman fanned four and allowed one run over his three-inning start to earn the win. Four pitchers kept the lead in check behind Wiseman with junior RHP Zac Ryan closing it out with a scoreless ninth for the save.
“Other than the first day, when the White Team really laid it on the Gold Team, I thought it was a competitive, well-played series,” said head coach Danny Hall. “The guys played well, they played hard and it gave us a chance to evaluate them in pressure situations. It gives us a good idea of where we stand entering the next phase of our preparation for the season.”
Junior C Arden Pabst put the White Team on the board with an RBI single to left in the first and English followed in the next at bat with his two-run single.
The Gold Team got one back in the bottom of the first as sophomore Kel Johnson ripped a two-out double to right followed by sophomore Trevor Craport’s RBI single to center. Freshman Anthony Perez’s RBI single up the middle in the fifth scored rookie Brian Moore, who doubled to lead off the inning, but that capped the scoring.
English and Gonzalez each had two hits for the White Team, and Gonzalez finished the series 6-for-13 with a triple, two RBI and six runs. Ryan, who was the winning pitcher in Game 1, earned the save in Game 3.
“Tristin can really hit and I thought Matt had a good fall,” said Hall. “He’s (Matt) getting a lot of base hits, he hit a couple homers early in the fall and I think he’s got a good idea of what he’s doing at the plate right now.”
Johnson and Craport each had two hits for the Gold Team on Tuesday and each finished the series hitting a team-best 4-for-11 (.364).
The #WGSERIES ends the Yellow Jackets’ fall practice period. Offical practice for the 2016 season begins in late January with Tech’s 2016 season-opener set for Friday, Feb. 19 versus Purdue at Russ Chandler Stadium.
