Philip Wheeler, Roberto Castro and Callie Miller were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, October 30, 2006.
Wheeler, a junior from Columbus, Ga., led an outstanding defensive effort in the Yellow Jackets 30-23 win over the Miami Hurricanes. Wheeler had six tackles and three of Tech’s six sacks for 22 yards in losses. The Tech defense forced four turnovers and held the Hurricanes to just 71 yards rushing and 3-for-12 on third downs. He leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in tackles for loss (12.5) and ranks second in sacks (8.0).
Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., tied for fourth place, two shots off the pace, at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. Castro’s finish was the first top-10 performance by a Tech player this fall. He helped Georgia Tech, the nation’s 18th-ranked team, post a team total of 308 Tuesday and finished the tournament at 39-over-par 903, 27 shots behind Texas.
Miller, a sophomore from Whitehouse, Ohio, helped Georgia Tech volleyball to a 2-0 record on the week, which included wins over 25th-ranked Duke and Wake Forest. She tied a career-high with 18 kills while hitting a match-best .412 against Duke. Miller also recorded six blocks against the Blue Devils. For the weekend, she averaged 3.00 kills and 1.11 blocks per game while raising her hitting percentage to a team-best .321.
