Volleyball To Battle BC And Maryland At O'Keefe

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball will look to remain perfect at home this season when it hosts Boston College at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a Sunday showdown with Maryland at 1 p.m. Tech is currently 5-0 at O’Keefe and 9-2 overall – the best start in the first 11 games under four-year head coach Tonya Johnson.

Alumni Night
Between the second and third sets against Boston College on Friday, the Tech volleyball team will recognize their alumni with more than 15 former players in attendance.

Georgia Tech (9-2, 1-0 ACC)
Georgia Tech went 2-0 this past weekend at the Courtyard Classic, sweeping Clemson in the ACC opener before taking down Georgia State in three sets. The Yellow Jackets have swept four of their last five opponents.

Bailey Hunter was named the MVP of the tournament after averaging 5.00 kills per set in the tournament. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team were senior rightside hitter Monique Mead and junior setter Kaleigh Colson.

As a team, Tech is first in the ACC with 2.03 service aces per set and second in the league with a .291 hitting percentage. Mead and Hunter are tops on the team with at least 150 kills apiece. Mead is third in the ACC, averaging 3.90 kills per set, while Hunter is fifth (3.85).

Boston College (7-6, 1-0 ACC)
The Eagles went 1-2 at the New England Challenge last weekend, falling 1-3 to Northeastern and 0-3 to Connecticut, before defeating Harvard in straight sets. BC is 1-0 in ACC play after defeating Maryland on Sept. 7, 3-1.

Boston College is hitting just .192 as a team, led by Cagla Sen (.484). Courtney Castle and Katty Workman are the Eagles’ offensive weapons. Castle has 171 kills and averages 3.56 per set (seventh in the league), while Workman leads the team with 186 kills (3.88 per set; fourth in the ACC).

Castle is a dual threat as she not only has the second-most kills on the squad, but also leads the team in digs with 167 and a 3.48 per set average – 10th in the ACC.

Tech leads the all-time series against the Eagles, 13-2. The Yellow Jackets defeated Boston College, 3-1, in the teams’ last meeting on Nov. 4, 2011 in Chestnut Hill,

Maryland (8-4, 0-1 ACC)
The Terrapins are on a three-game winning streak after sweeping the competition at the Blackbird Invitational in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Sophomore Adreene Elliott had 31 kills and 23 blocks on the weekend en route to being named MVP of the tournament. Mary Cushman and Kamrin Gold were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Elliot leads the squad with a .423 hitting percentage, while Ashleigh Crutcher has a team-best 140 kills and a 3.33 kills per set average.

The 6’3 Elliot also leads the team with 50 total blocks, 16 solo stuffs and a 1.19 blocks per set average.

Tech holds a slim lead in the all-time series against the Terps, 27-26. The Yellow Jackets downed Maryland, 3-1, in the teams’ last meeting on Nov. 5, 2011 in College Park, Md.

Aces
The Jackets have improved their serving efforts in the 2012 season and rank nationally as a team and individually in the league.
– GT is No. 2 in the country and first in the ACC with a 2.03 aces per set average
– Four Yellow Jackets have double-digit serving aces – Monique Mead (18), Kaleigh Colson (18), Susan Carlson (16) and Bailey Hunter (15)
– All four of those Yellow Jackets are ranked in the top 10 among ACC players.
– Mead and Colson are tied for No. 31 in the nation (0.46 aces/set)

Broom ‘Em
– Six of Tech’s nine victories have been sweeps
– Four of the last five matches have been won in straight sets
– Tech has not been swept this season, taking at least one set in its two losses
– Tech swept Clemson in the ACC opener
– It was the first time the Yellow Jackets swept the Tigers since 2005

Home Court Advantage
The Yellow Jackets are an undefeated 5-0 in O’Keefe Gym and are off to their best start of the season under four-year head coach Tonya Johnson.
