ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Volleyball team will open the 2009 season by hosting the Regency Suites Invitational beginning Friday night at O’Keefe Gym. The Yellow Jackets play their first match at 7 p.m. against Georgia, while Mercer and Austin Peay get the tournament going at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Tech will play games against Austin Peay (12:30 p.m.) and Mercer (7 p.m.). At 10:30 a.m., Georgia and Mercer square off, while the Bulldogs then face Austin Peay at 4:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance either online at www.ramblinwreck.com/tickets, in person at the Georgia Tech Ticket Office located at the corner of Bobby Dodd Way and Techwood Drive or over the phone at 1-888-TECH-TIX. Tickets will also be sold at the O’Keefe Gym box office beginning one hour before the scheduled match.

All seating is general admission and costs $4 for adults and $2 for children. Saturday will be separate admission for each of the sessions, but there will be no charge for the early session (10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. games). The gym will be cleared between the two Saturday sessions. Fans are encouraged to arrive early on Friday as the last two home matches against Georgia have been sell-outs.

Friday’s night’s match against Georgia will be the debut for head coach Tonya Johnson. Johnson spent the previous six years at the University of Texas as an associate head coach and an assistant coach. Prior to her time in Austin, she was an assistant coach at LSU for five years.

“We are very excited for the start of the new season and hosting Georgia on Friday night,” said Johnson. “All I have heard about is the great fan involvement and electric atmosphere in O’Keefe for every match. Our players really feed off of that and I can’t wait to see a packed house this weekend. They have been working very hard in the preseason and this is going to be a fun team to watch all year long.”

The Yellow Jackets are 19-10 all-time in home openers. This will mark the first time in the 29-year history of the program that Georgia Tech has hosted the Bulldogs in its home opener.

Tech is 10-21 all-time against Georgia, but has won three straight and 10 of the last 11 matches. Tech holds an 18-1 all-time advantage against Mercer, while this will be the first time it has played Austin Peay. Tech and Mercer have not played since the 1998 season.

Once again, home matches will be broadcast on WREK, 91.1 FM and online at wrek.org. Veteran play-by-play announcer Kurt Hoyt enters his eighth season calling all of the action. Live stats for all of the matches this weekend will be available via Gametracker at www.ramblinwreck.com.
