Laura DeMichelis (Aurora, Colo.), a 5-10 outside hitter signed a national letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech, head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky announced Tuesday.

DeMichelis, a member of the USA Youth National Team in 2002 and 2003, is a 2004 signee who will graduate from high school and train in Colorado this fall before joining the Yellow Jackets in 2005.

“This is huge addition to our program,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Laura is one of the most dynamic high profile volleyball athletes that the Yellow Jacket program has ever signed and her experience with the Youth National Team will be invaluable as she joins the squad for the 2005 season to compete right away for one of the outside hitter spots.”

A highly skilled athlete who chose Tech over Minnesota, Stanford, Long Beach State, Colorado State and Washingtion, she has been named to the PrepVolleyball.com Top 50 list and the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 list and currently plays for the prestigious Colorado Juniors club team. In addition, she helped lead Overland High School to the 2003 5A State Championship and was named to the 5A all-state team while leading the state of Colorado in kills per game her senior season.

“Laura is not only explosive and powerful, but also has the skills and abilities to contribute in the back row as well as the front row,” said Shymansky. “Most importantly, Laura is a determined competitor and a very special person. She has the right mentality and character for our team’s style and work ethic and she will be delight to have as a key building block for the future of our program.”
