Trio of Jackets Set for NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

March 7, 2002

ATLANTA – By virtue of their qualifying performances earlier this season, Georgia Tech track and field team members Brendon Mahoney, Renee Metivier and Sara Pardue will compete in the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begin Friday in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

The 2002 ACC Indoor Most Valuable Performer, Mahoney will compete in the mile. He posted an automatic qualifying time of 4:00.34 at the Iowa State Last Chance Meet. This time ranks as the second-fastest indoor mark in Tech history. At this season’s ACC indoor championships, he won the 800 meters and placed second in the mile. He earned All-America honors in the 800 meters during the outdoor season in 2000.

Metivier is slated to compete in the both the 3000 and 5000 meters, after setting school records in both events. Her qualifying time of 16:12.26 at the ACC Championships, ranks as the nation’s second fastest this season. Metivier’s qualifying mark of 9:22.89 in the 3000 came at the Carolina Last Chance Meet. The 2001 NCAA cross country runner-up, Metivier earned All-ACC honors in both the 3000 and 5000 this season.

A two-time All-American, Pardue will compete in the 800 meters. She posted a qualifying mark of 2:06.85 at the Iowa State Last Chance Meet, eclipsing her own school record, which she established at the 2000 NCAA Indoor Championships. She earned All-America honors in that event, as well as the distance medley relay, two years ago.

The meet opens at noon on Friday, with Pardue being the first Jacket to take the track. The women’s 800-meter prelims are slated for 4 p.m. Mahoney will run at 6:35 p.m. in the men’s mile prelims, while Metivier will run in the finals of the 5000 at 7:20 p.m. On Saturday, the finals of the men’s mile are slated for 6:15 p.m. The women’s 800 final is at 6:25 p.m., and Metivier will run in the finals of the 3000 at 7:25 p.m.
