Track & Field Set for Clemson Invitational

Jan. 7, 2010

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams return to actionthis weekend when they take part in the 2010 Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C. Action gets underway on Friday at 5 p.m. and concludes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

“We are looking forward to heading to Clemson to compete in the first indoor meet of 2010,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “We are taking a small group that we feel are ready to compete. This will be an excellent opportunity to see where we are, conditioning wise, coming off a lengthy Holiday Break.”

In all, 15 men’s athletes will be making the trip to Clemson for the meet. On Dec. 4th, the Tech men competed in Clemson at the Roaring Tiger Invitational and had a strong showing. In all, three Yellow Jacket athletes picked up victories, as Morgan Stephenson won the one-mile run, Alphonso Jordan captured the long jump and Aaron Unterberger won the pole vault.

Several Jackets also competed at the MTSU Christmas Invitational on Dec. 11th, as Hunter Clasen won the 500m for the second consecutive year at the meet.

The women’s squad returns to the track this weekend after taking a long holiday break, as the Yellow Jackets have been idle since Dec. 4th’s Roaring Tiger Invite. That event was also a successful one for the women, as Melanie Akwule finished first in the 60-meter hurdles and Joanna Wright won the pole vault.

“Our women are looking forward to this opportunity to compete and see where they’re at after the holiday break,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “After competing at Clemson prior to fall semester exams, we were pleased with the performances we were able to produce. This weekend we need to see that we’ve at least maintained that level of fitness.

“This meet will be in earnest our preparations for the ACC Indoor Championships, as well as the NCAA Indoor Championships later on. Even though we’ve had a significant layoff from organized team practice, the upside right now is that everyone is pretty well-rested.”

Fans are reminded that results and a full recap will be available on Ramblinwreck.com after competition is finished on both Friday and Saturday.
