Track & Field Set for Auburn Track Classic

April 1, 2010

Schedule of Events

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams are back in action this weekend, hitting the road for the first time on the outdoor season when they take part in the 2010 Auburn Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. Things gets underway at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on Friday at 4:30 (CT) with the hammer throw and continue on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (CT).

Tech is one of 13 teams that will be competing this weekend, as the Yellow Jackets will go up against three teams (the Auburn women’s and men’s teams, along with Kentucky’s women’s team) that are ranked in the preseason USTFCCCA Track & Field Top 25.

Georgia Tech comes into the meet off of a successful effort at the Yellow Jacket Invitational last weekend. The Auburn Tiger Track Classic will also be the last meet for Tech until the ACC Outdoor Championships, which begin on April 15th in Clemson, S.C.

Last weekend at the YJI, the Tech men’s team captured four events overall. Seniors Juan Cave and Steve Marcelle won the high jump and discus, respectively, while freshman Patrick Barron captured the 1500m run and junior Antonio McKay Jr. took the top spot in the 400m dash.

“The Tiger Track Classic has been a very competitive meet over the years and the teams invited to this years edition will make it equally so,” men’s track head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “I was very pleased with the effort and competitiveness of our team during the Yellow Jacket Invitational last Saturday. We look to kick it up another notch or two this weekend at Auburn.”

For the women, two Georgia Tech athletes captured events at the YJI. Sophomore Mary Kate DuBard won the 3000m steeplechase after beating her nearest competitor by 15 seconds, while junior Bailey Wagner captured the discus.

“The Auburn Tiger Track Classic is another great opportunity for our women to keep making improvements heading into the ACC Championships later in April,” women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “The competition will be very good and we’re finally seeing spring-like weather. Practice through the week has been very productive and the women are looking forward to every chance to line up and compete.”

Fans are reminded that live results will be available throughout the weekend at www.deltatiming.com. Full results and a recap will be posted on RamblinWreck.com once action wraps up on both Friday and Saturday evening as well.
