Track & Field Hosts Georgia to Open Outdoor Season

March 18, 2010

Schedule of Events

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech track & field team opens the 2010 outdoor portion of their schedule this weekend when they host rival Georgia in the Georgia Tech – Georgia Dual Meet. Action gets underway at the George C. Griffin Track with the hammer at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, with all other events kicking off at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.

“This is going to be an exciting weekend,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “We expect a very close team competition and it’s a great way to open the outdoor season.”

The dual between the Yellow Jackets and the Bulldog marks just the second time in the last 18 years that both schools have faced off in a dual meet. Last season, Georgia was victorious on both the men’s (104-98) and women’s (103-96) in the first meet between the schools since 1992.

For the men, Georgia Tech is led by its duo of NCAA Indoor All-Americans, seniors Alphonso Jordan and Steve Marcelle.

Jordan captured All-American honors for the second straight season at the NCAA Indoor’s after placing third in the triple jump. Jordan, who was also the Field MVP of the ACC Indoor Championships, posted a mark of 53 feet, 4.25 inches at the NCAA’s to earn the All-American nod. Marcelle earned All-American honors for the first time in his career, posting a throw of 62 feet, four inches to pace the Jackets to a 17th place finish overall at the meet.

For the women, junior Joanna Wright was the squad’s most impressive performer during the indoor campaign. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native won the pole vault at the ACC Championships with a 13 feet, 9.75 inch effort that broke a school record.

“Our women are healthy, fit, and very eager to be engaged in head to head competition,” continued Drosky. “Georgia has a very solid team and we match up with them very well. The format of the meet is great, with the majority of the events packed into a two hour time schedule.”

Fans are reminded that live results will be available all weekend at www.deltatiming.com. A recap and final results will also be available at RamblinWreck.com once action wraps up on Saturday.
