ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech track & field squad returns to action this weekend in Blacksburg, Va. as they take part in the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational. Action gets underway on Friday at 5 p.m. with the long jump and the 3000-meter run, with competition continuing on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Tech will be competing against another strong field this weekend in Blacksburg, as the Yellow Jackets are one of the seven ACC team taking part in the 11-team meet.
“In past years, we have had excellent performances at the VT Elite and we are looking to continue that pattern this weekend in Blacksburg,” men’s track coach Grover Hinsdale said. “They have an excellent facility and have invited a group of outstanding programs to take part.”
Leading the men’s squad into this weekend’s meet is junior Antonio McKay Jr., who garnered ACC Performer of the Week honors after posting a career-day at the Rod McCravy Invitational last week in Lexington, Ky. The junior captured the 400-meter dash on the campus of the University of Kentucky in a personal-best time of 46.63. The time was also an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Meanwhile, senior Alphonso Jordan also recorded an NCAA Provisional Mark in the triple jump with a 52′ 1¼” leap in Lexington.
For the women, last weekend McCravy Invitational was filled with impressive efforts. In all, 15 Yellow Jacket women athletes finished in the top ten in several events on the weekend, as Terri Ann Grant registered the best finish of the weekend in the high jump with a second place finish (5′ 8″).
Tech will try to equal their performance in last season Virginia Tech Elite Invitational, in which Four Yellow Jacket jumpers tallied career best marks.
