Track & Field has Strong Showing at Roaring Tiger Open

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams opened their 2010 indoor season on Friday Evening at the Roaring Tiger Open in Clemson, S.C.

The meet began with the women’s 60-meter dash where Tech’s Jenae Anderson finished second in 7.59. Next in the 60 meter hurdles, Melanie Akwule picked up the first victory of the night for the Yellow Jackets after crossing the finish line in 8.65. Teammate Jasmine Isley finished a close second in the event, finishing in 8.69.

Next in the men’s 4×800 relay, the team of Hunter Clasen, Subbu Sivansen, Mike Lawson and Jay Oatts, finished second in a time of 8:09. The next top performer for the Jackets on the night was Tiffany Grant, who finished fifth in the 300-meter dash in 40.32.

In the one mile run, Morgan Stephenson picked up the second win of the night for Tech in the one mile run, crossing the finish line in 4:42.02. Stephenson edged out teammate Kevin Arends in the event, who ran the mile in 4:44.05 to finish a close second. Joseph Stowe made a clean sweep of the top three in the event for the Jackets after finishing in 4:44.29.

Next up was the women’s weight throw, where Tech’s Bailey Wagner finished second after posting a 15.97m effort in the finals. Megan Manning placed fifth in the weight throw with 14.51m throw. On the men’s side in the weight throw, Dustin Thompson finished third with a 16.85m effort. Thompson also registered a fifth place finish in the shot put with a 13.51m effort.

In the finals of the long jump, Alphonso Jordan earned the third win of the night for Georgia Tech with a 7.33m jump in the finals. In the women’s portion of the long jump, Jasmine Kent finished second with a 5.62m effort, while Jhanelle McLeod finished in third with a 5.51m jump.

In the men’s pole vault, Aaron Unterberger was victorious with a 4.75m effort, while in the women’s pole vault, Joanna Wright earned the fifth and final win of the night for the Jackets with a 3.05m throw.

The Yellow Jacket men’s team returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the MTSU Invitational, while the women’s team is idle until the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 8th.
