Track & Field Finishes off Action at Auburn Tiger Track Classic

AUBURN, Ala. – The Georgia Tech track & field teams took part in the second and final day of the Auburn Tiger Track Classic at the Hutsell-Rosen Track in Auburn, Ala. on Saturday.

First on the women’s side, things got underway with the 100m dash, where Taylor Davidson finished 11th overall after crossing the finish line in 11.86. In the 200-meter dash, two Yellow Jackets registered top ten finishes. Kellie Christian placed seventh overall with a time of 24.33, while Davidson had an impressive ninth place finish in 24.39. Christian also registered a top ten finish in the 400-meter dash in eighth with a time of 55.82.

In the 800-meter run, Jade Sims finished eighth overall in 2:14.51, while teammate Amanda Montgomery finished 11th in 2:16.61. In the 1500-meter run, Mary Kownack earned another top-ten finish for the Jackets in tenth after crossing the finish line in 4:46.92. Teammate Felicity Brower finished right behind in 11th in 4:57.70.

The next event of note was the 400-meter hurdles, in which Jasmine Isley and Leslie Njoku finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Isley finished in 59.99, while Njoku crossed the finish line in 1:02.12. The last track event for the Jacket women was the 3000m steeplechase where Annie Martin finished second in 10:46.66.

In the women’s field events, Bianca Stewart finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5′ 7¾”, while Jhanelle McLeod registered an impressive third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 19′ 0¼”. Mellany Stanuslaus’ mark of 40′ 7″ was good enough to earn her a second place finish in the triple jump, while McLeod finished fifth in the event with a mark of 39′ 11″.

On the men’s side, the first event of note on the afternoon was the 400-meter dash, in which junior Antonio McKay Jr. finished sixth overall in a time of 47.60. Next up in the 800-meter run, Shawn Roberts registered an impressive fifth place finish n 1:52.18, while Billy Mateker finished seventh in 1:53.62.

In the 1500-meter run, D.J. McMillan finished seventh overall in 3:55.77, while Garad Soderman placed ninth in the 3000-meter run in 8:37.50. In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Alphonso Jordan finished fourth overall in 14.15, while in the final track event of note for the men’s team, the 4×400 relay, Tech’s relay team crossed the finish line in 3:12.88 to finish third overall.

In the men’s field events, Jordan led the way, winning the triple jump with a mark of 52′ 6¼”. Teammate Omar Morrison was just as impressive in the event, finishing right behind his teammate in second with a mark of 49′ 0¼”. In the long jump, Jordan barely missed taking another event, finishing in second with a mark of 23′ 5½”, while Morrison placed fifth in 22′ 3¼”.

The Georgia Tech track & field team’s return to action on April 15th when they kick off the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships in Clemson, S.C.
