Track & Field Teams Reap USTFCCCA Academic Honors

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s track and field teams are among the Division I squads named All-Academic Teams for their academic performance, and nine individuals on those teams were named All-Academic Athletes for the 2020-21 academic year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Georgia Tech’s men’s team posted an aggregate 3.14 grade-point average for the 2020-21 academic year, while the women’s team posted a 3.26 GPA.

Yellow Jacket men named All-Academic Athletes are sophomore pole vaulter Brian Hauch (mechanical engineering), senior distance runner Andrew Kent (Masters, mechanical engineering), freshman distance runner Alex Thomas (civil and environmental engineering), sophomore high jumper McKinley Thompson (biology) and freshman triple jumper John Watkins (electrical engineering).

Senior distance runner Liz Galarza (biomedical engineering), senior long and triple jumper Bria Matthews (Masters, electrical and computer engineering), junior pole vaulter Olivia Moore (industrial design) and sophomore hurdler Anna Witherspoon (business administration) were honored as All-Academic Athletes from the women’s team.

Hauch and Matthews previously were named to the 2020-21 Academic All-District Track and Field and Cross Country teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as well as to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Track and Field teams. Thomas also made the ACC’s All-Academic men’s team.

Eligibility requirements for individual student-athletes include a grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, and completion of at least two (2) semesters or three (3) quarters at the nominating institution. They must have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, for the most recent indoor season, or have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships.

Eligibility requirements for teams is a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale for all student-athletes on the institution’s NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field for the 2020-21 academic year, including the most recent grading period.

The Alexander-Tharpe Fund is the fundraising arm of Georgia Tech athletics, providing scholarship, operations and facilities support for Georgia Tech’s 400-plus student-athletes.
