Three Out Of Four Ain't Bad

May 12, 2012

For those of us who are A) Georgia Tech fans and B) active in social media, Saturday was an interesting day in how we follow our favorite teams.

Meanwhile, Saturday was an outstanding day for Tech’s softball team, which beat Virginia Tech to win the ACC championship, and for the Yellow Jacket women’s tennis team, which upset Alabama on its home court to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Saturday, in fact, was a monumental day for women’s sports on the Flats. Two months after the women’s basketball team wrapped up its most successful season ever, the softball program further established itself as the ACC leader and women’s tennis coach Bryan Shelton called his team’s win over Alabama one of the greatest matches he has witnessed.

Mix in Tech graduate Matt Kuchar’s performance in The Player’s Championship — he’s one stroke back entering today’s final round — and Saturday was a great day to be a Yellow Jacket.

Kuchar’s performance was easy enough to follow on national television. Softball’s victory came on ESPNU, which is now seen in 72 million homes. Those following tennis leaned on the internet, where there was live scoring on RamblinWreck.com and constant updates on Twitter.

We’ll have follow-up stories on both softball and women’s tennis in tomorrow’s Sting Daily.

The buzz on Twitter late Saturday afternoon was interesting. Georgia Tech football players and former player Roddy Jones all chimed in with Tweets of congratulations.

By the way , here is a list of Twitter accounts you may want to follow if you’re a Tech fan.

Here’s a sample of what people were Tweeting Saturday following the Jackets’ win over Virginia Tech in softball:
