ATLANTA – Three members of the Georgia Tech men’s track & field team will compete at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday – Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Alphonso Jordan, James Lemons II and Steve Marcelle had qualified for the championships by reaching the provisional standards established for each event.
“We are all very proud of Alphonso, James, and Steve for this great accomplishment of making it into the NCAA Championships,” head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “They have performed exceptionally well throughout the indoor season and, through their efforts, have earned the right to compete in these Championships. I know they will make the most out of this great opportunity.”
Jordan, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., is ranked 11th in the nation in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 4 ¾ inches, which he set at the Virginia Tech Elite meet on Feb. 8.
Lemons, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., has the nation’s sixth-best mark in the triple jump after landing a personal-best jump of 52 feet, 8 ¼ inches at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 18. Lemons has also qualified for the long jump with a mark of 25 feet, 4 inches, which he set at the VT Elite meet.
Marcelle, a sophomore from Green Bay, Wis., has reached the NCAA Championships in the shot put behind a school-record mark of 60 feet, 5 inches, which he set at last weekend’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
The complete list of all student-athletes competing in the championships is available on the NCAA Web site. The NCAA Championships begin on Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. with the men’s heptathlon. Running event finals are slated for 7:50 p.m. start with the women’s 5,000 meters scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
