ATLANTA – Three freshmen will represent the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team at the South Carolina Tennis Tournament this weekend at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. The tournament is scheduled to be begin on Friday morning and will run through Sunday.
“With only three of our guys traveling to this tournament, it will allow these guys a chance to play some of the better players in the country,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “This is the type of tournament that could jump start their singles games and we hope it will also help our guys in doubles.”
Doug Kenny, Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin will compete at the South Carolina tournament. All three freshmen enjoyed very good performances last weekend at the Georgia Tech Fall Tournament. Kenny defeated the “B” singles draw No. 1 seed in the first round of the tournament on his way to the quarterfinals. Muguruza and Potvin teamed up for the first time this season and reached the finals of “A” double draw.
“Doug (Kenny) has had a great start to his collegiate career,” Thorne said. “I hope he continues to learn and get better with each tournament he plays. Eliot (Potvin) has begun to adapt his game to learn how to beat different opponents. Miguel (Muguruza) has shown some good things in doubles and we would love to see him step up in singles.”
Following this weekend’s tournament, the Jackets will head to the ITA Regional Tournament, beginning Thursday, October 18 in Charlottesville, Va.
