The Good Word

Sept. 6, 2006

TO: Fans, Friends and Supporters of Georgia Tech Athletics

FROM: Dan Radakovich, Director of Athletics

Well, for the last five months I have been writing in this space that I could hardly wait for my first football game at Bobby Dodd Stadium as Georgia Tech’s Director of Athletics. I got my chance last Saturday night and all I can say is: WOW! I am so proud of the way you created an electric atmosphere that ranks with the best I have ever witnessed in my more than 20 years in college athletics.

Although we came up short on the scoreboard, the positives for Georgia Tech were monumental. Our campus, its students and indeed our athletic program received rave reviews on a national stage. The enthusiasm, support and loyalty permeated not only the Atlanta area, but resonated from coast to coast as ESPN and ABC told our story. From the television commentators to sports journalists from every part of America, there was agreement that Georgia Tech has a place among the nation’s elite collegiate programs.

I wanted to issue this special “post-game” edition of The Good Word to simply say thanks to all of you who continue to create this groundswell of support. I hope you see evidence that we are working very hard, from the product on the field to our pre-game pageantry to the very smallest of details to reward your loyalty. We are certainly not all the way there, but we will learn from our experiences from week to week and the fun, excitement and enjoyment of our events will continue to be a source of pride.

Since last Saturday night I have received dozens of e-mails, phone calls and letters. More than 90 percent of the feedback has been positive. However, you should be aware that there were some isolated incidents of poor and disrespectful fan behavior. While this was clearly a small minority of rude, obnoxious fans representing both teams, we apologize to any of you who may have encountered this. We will make a concerted effort, working with local and campus law enforcement to maintain a safe and fan-friendly environment.

Before I close, just a couple of notes:

Congratulations to our volleyball team for the season-opening victory over Georgia and a 3-1 start.

Remind all of your friends and neighbors that we are offering $10 upper-deck tickets to our next two home games. Let’s fill the seats.

Our event staff is urging all patrons to enter the stadium through the gate printed on your ticket.

When tailgating, please be considerate of fellow patrons and do not infringe upon other parking spaces or block traffic.

Now that the season is off to a rousing start, I urge you to be loud and proud for each and every game the rest of the way. We can accomplish great things this year and beyond.
