Sept. 2, 2011
ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams will start their 2011 campaign at the UGA Equestrian Complex on Saturday, September 3. The men’s team will begin things with an 8k at 9:00 a.m. and the women will follow with a 5k of their own at 9:45 a.m.
Tech is one of 10 teams competing at the invitational. Others include Alabama, Georgia, Georgia State, Tulane, Mercer, Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, Chattahoochee Tech and Emmanuel College.
The meet is the only one in the state of Georgia for the Jackets during the 2011 season.
The Jacket women will be lead by Mary Kate DuBard, who was just one place shy of a trip to the NCAA Championships last season. The women’s team will be on the youthful side as they have only six returnees but add eight new faces to the corps.
The men’s team returns a core of seasoned runners. Led by D.J. McMillan and Patrick Barron, the Jackets only added a handful of fresh faces to the team in the offseason.
The Jackets competed at the UGA Equestrian Complex twice last season, first at the UGA Invitational followed by a dual meet with the Bulldogs that saw an eventful end to the men’s race.
A stretch by Barron across the line gave the then-sophomore his first collegiate victory and provided for a photo finish. On the women’s side, Mary Kate DuBard easily won, also her first ever collegiate win as a Jacket.
The Georgia Invitational is free to the public.
