Tech's Rhett, Swarn Advance at USA Track Nationals

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Georgia Tech junior Amandi Rhett advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 100 meters, and senior Bryan Swarn moved on to the semis in the men’s 400 meters with strong performances Thursday at the USA Track and Field National Championships at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Rhett, who recently competed in three events at the NCAA Championships, placed fifth in the second heat and 15th overall with a time of 11.53. She moves on to Friday’s 9:10 p.m. Eastern semifinal. The final of the event is slated for 10:40 p.m. Eastern Friday. Torri Edwards of adidas (11.00) posted Thursday’s top performance.

A four-time All-American, Swarn ran 46.44 in the 400 meters to claim the 16th and final spot in the semifinals, which are slated for Friday at 10:50 p.m. Eastern. The final of the men’s 400 is scheduled for 4:20 p.m. Eastern Saturday and will be a part of NBC’s television coverage. Nike’s Tyree Washington (45.26) ran the top time Thursday.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the 2003 World Track and Field Championships in Paris.

In addition to Rhett and Swarn, six other Jackets are competing at the USA Track and Field National Championships and USATF Junior Nationals. Competition resumes Friday and concludes Sunday. The meet will be broadcast live from 4-6 p.m. Eastern Saturday on NBC and live from 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2.
