Atlanta (Oct. 17) – Georgia Tech freshman Charlotte Pernet finished runner-up in singles and doubles in women’s tennis action Sunday at the Tennessee/St. Mary’s Health System Classic at the UT Tennis Center in Knoxville.
Pernet fell to Tennessee’s Candy Reid in the finals of the No. 4 singles flight, and Pernet and fellow freshman Jaime Wong fell to Reid and Alison Ojeda in the No. 2 doubles final. Reid topped Pernet 7-5, 7-5, and Reid and Ojeda won 8-1 over Pernet and Wong.
Tech sophomore Mason Miller and junior Bobbi Guthrie both finished in third place in their respective flights with wins on Sunday. Miller topped Purdue’s Erika Quebe, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-5 to finish third in the No. 3 singles flight, and Guthrie topped Furman’s Jarrell Starnes, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 5 flight.
Senior Sabrina Pardo, freshman Mysti Morris, sophomore Laura Ozolins and senior Tamarra Jenkin all ended the tournament with final-day victories.
Pardo defeated NC State’s Francis Barragan, 6-1, 7-6 (5) for seventh place in the No. 2 flight. Morris claimed fifth in No. 3 singles by topping Furman’s Gene Holman, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Ozolins also finished fifth with a win over Katrina Gildemeister of NC State in the No. 6 flight. Jenkin defeated Tnnessee’s Amy Bartlett, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in round-robin play in the No. 7 flight.
Guthrie and Jenkin also teamed to take fifth in the No. 2 doubles flight with an 8-5 win over Megan Dunigan and Starnes of Furman.
