Chattanooga, Tenn. – Georgia Tech junior men’s tennis players West Nott and Scott Schnugg were the only two Yellow Jackets remaining after a weather-delayed first round of play at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. The event is being played at the Champions Club.
Nott was Tech’s first singles winner of the day, as he defeated Michael Hailey in impressive straight-set fashion. Nott won the first set 6-0 and then cruised to a win in the second set by a 6-2 count. He will face Eduardo Pacheco in the second round on Saturday.
Schnugg played well into the night to pick up a straight-set win over Khalid Al Nahhani as play was suspended throughout the day before a number of matches were delayed until after 9 p.m. Schnugg won the first set by a 6-4 score, before rolling to a 6-1 second-set victory. He will now face Robbie Blair in the second round on Saturday.
Among the Yellow Jackets’ other singles competitors in the field were rookies Trevor McLeod, who dropped his first-round match with Willy Gali in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 score, and Marko Rajevac, who fell to Hunter Skogman, 6-4, 6-0. Junior Joao Menano fell to David O’Connor in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while fellow junior Jason Pieters dropped a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision to Jacek Wolicki.
The final Tech singles player in the field was senior Fabio Campos, who dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to Chris Varga in the first round.
The ITA All-American Tournament will continue on Saturday with the second and third round of singles play, along with the first two rounds of doubles competition. Full tournament results are available at www.itatennis.com.
