Tech's Muguruza Advances to Round of 16 at ACC Indoor Championships

Jose Luis Muguruza advanced to the Round of 16, defeating Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State, 6-3, 6-4 on the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, NC. Muguruza, the sixth seed in the tournament, remains as the only Yellow Jacket alive in the main draw of the tournament as six Tech players, including Scott Schnugg, Trevor McLeod, Joao Menano, Zachary Rath, West Nott and Nico Gysi each fell in the Round of 32. Muguruza will now face Brett Ross from Wake Forest while Tech’s Jack DePaolo, Noah Tyler, Marko Rajevac and Zachary Rath each dropped their first match of the tournament and will now move to the consolation bracket.

Schnugg, the tournament’s eighth seed, received a bye in the first round before falling to Jason Zimmerman of Duke, 6-4, 7-6 (1). Schnugg will now face P.J. Petrides of North Carolina in the second round of the consolations.

Rath, who received a first-round bye, fell in the round of 32, losing to Darrin Cohen of Virginia, 7-6 (2), 6-4. Rath now takes on Jonathan Janda of North Carolina in the second round of the consolations.

McLeod defeated William Noblitt of NC State, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Todd Paul of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2. McLeod now faces Chris Gonyer from Virginia in the consolations.

Nott defeated NC State’s Val Banada, 6-2, 6-0 before losing to Virginia’s Doug Stewart, the second seed of the tournament, in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Gysi also fell in the Round of 32, defeating Tim Taylor of Virginia, 6-3, 7-5, but losing to Will Shaw of NC State, 6-3, 6-4 and will now face Ryan Johnson of NC State in the consolations.

Menano began the tournament with a win over the Wolfpack’s Ryan Johnson, 6-2, 6-2, but then fell in his second match of the day to fifth-seeded Andrew Hamar of Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-1. He will now take on Joe Bates from Wake Forest in the consolations.

DePaolo fell in his first match to Chris Gonyer of Virginia, 6-3, 6-3, and has advanced to the round of 16 in consolations as Duke’s Peter Shults was forced to withdraw due to injury. Tyler dropped his match to Peter Rodrigues from Duke, 6-1, 6-0, and will take on Conor Taylor from NC State. Rajevac lost to the Wolfpack’s Conor Taylor, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and will compete against Andre Iriarte of NC State in consolations.

In doubles action, the top seeded team of Muguruza and Schnugg as well as the tandem of Menano and Rath advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Muguruza and Schnugg defeated UNC’s Luchichi/Porter, 8-3 and will now face Rodrigues/Stokke of Duke. Menano/Rath paired to defeat the Tar Heel’s Aiken/Watkins, 8-6, and will face Metzler/Monroe of North Carolina.

After winning their first match, Gysi and McLeod fell to fourth-seeded Ross/Spice of Wake Forest, 8-6 in the round of 16.

The team of Nott/Rajevac and DePaolo/Tyler each lost first round matches and will compete Saturday in the consolations.
