Tech's Howard Named National Athlete of the Week

April 5, 2005

ATLANTA – Junior Chaunte Howard was named as the Female United States Track Coaches Association Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division I track and field, announced on Tuesday morning. Howard posted Georgia Tech season-bests in the high jump and ran a leg of the 4×100-meter relay team last weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Howard, a 2004 U.S. Olympian in the high jump, cleared the high jump bar at 6 feet, 3-and-a-half inches, this past Saturday to tie a Griffin Track record, held by U.S. Olympian teammate Tisha Waller. That mark is currently tops in the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Riverside, Calif., native also participated on the women’s 4x100m relay, helping the team to a third-place finish with a season-best time of 44.45. The Jackets hold the top time in this relay in the ACC.

The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action again this Saturday, April 10, at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
