ATLANTA – Maryland’s Kierra Foster, Georgia Tech’s Chaunte Howard and Florida State’s Lacy Janson were named the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Women’s Performers of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The trio of athletes achieved NCAA Automatic Qualifying marks in their respective events, as well as sitting atop the conference with their impressive performances over the weekend.
Junior NCAA high jump national champion Chaunte Howard won the women’s high jump at the Kentucky Invitational with a NCAA Automatic qualifying mark of 6’1.50″ to lead the Yellow Jackets at the indoor track meet. The 2004 Olympian also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.88 and finished the 200-meter race with a time of 24.92.
Foster captured the women’s long jump competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational after posting an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 21′ 2.5″. The junior from West Palm Beach, Fla. also tallied a fourth place finish (8.62) in the finals of 60m hurdles. Her fastest time of 8.61 came in the semifinals of that event.
Janson hit the automatic qualifying mark in the women’s pole vault competition at the Florida Intercollegiates in Gainesville, Fla. over the weekend. The redshirt-junior from Sarasota, Fla. crossed the bar at 13′ 9.25″ to win the event.
The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for the Niswonger Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22.
