Tech's DeVinny Betters 200 IM Record on Day One of NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Georgia Tech freshman Cara DeVinny bettered her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday in the opening session of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas.

With a time of 2:04.11, she placed 48th in the preliminary round of the event. The top eight finishers advanced to tonight’s final, while the next eight will swim in the consolation final.

Stanford senior Shelly Ripple posted the top prelim time, clocking a mark of 1:56.24.

DeVinny, who reached the championships in the first season of women’s swimming at Tech, will also swim the 400 IM Friday, followed by the 200 fly on Saturday.
