Tech's DeVinny and Saum Advance to Finals at ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Competition

College Park, MD – In the second day of preliminary competition, Georgia Tech’s Cara DeVinny and Anna Saum advanced to the finals at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

DeVinny is seeded second heading to tonight’s finals in the 400 individual medley. In the preliminaries, she recorded a time of 4:18.13, which was a school record and also bettered her NCAA “B” Cut established earlier this season. In the 100 yard backstoke, Saum is ranked fourth after turning in a school record time of 56.80 in the mornings preliminaries and set a school record in the 100 yard butterfly (56.51) to advance to the consolation finals.

Jill Vukmanic (58.46) and Jenny Lentz (59.51) recorded lifetime bests in the 100 yard butterfly to qualify for the bonus consolations. Katie Duffy recorded a personal record (59.85), but did not qualify for action tonight.

The Jackets had several other competitors with solid performances in today’s preliminary session. Michelle Maguire posted a personal record in the 400 Individual Medley (4:28.93) to advance to the consolation finals. Melissa Vander Wood recorded a lifetime-best in the 100 yard backstroke (59.92) and Ashley Skala had a personal record in the 400 Individual Medley (4:35.89) but did not advance to competition tonight.

In the 100 yard butterfly, Saum set a school record (56.51) to advance to the consolation finals, while Jill Vukmanic (58.46) and Jenny Lentz (59.51) recorded lifetime bests to qualify for the bonus consolations. Katie Duffy recorded a personal record (59.85), but did not qualify for action tonight.

Lentz also posted a lifetime-best and school record mark of 1:05.38 in the 100 yard backstroke, which places her in tonight’s consolation final. Sara Gilli established a personal best (1:06.98) to qualify for the bonus consolation.

Other swimmers competing tonight include Jennifer Christenson in the 200 yard freestyle, and Jaclyn Keys and Katie Duffy in the 100 yard backstroke.

Action resumes at 7 p.m. tonight, with the top 16 finishers in each event scoring points.
