ATLANTA–Georgia Tech’s defense, tennis standout Kristi Miller and volleyball star Jayme Gergen were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, October 11, 2004.
The Tech defense led the Yellow Jackets to a win on the road at No. 23 Maryland, 20-7. The defense gave up just 81 total yards to the Terps, which is the fewest number of yards allowed since allowing 32 to Florida in 1963. The defense also allowed just seven yards rushing, marking the seventh lowest total in school history. The effort was the best defensive performance in the nation this year and the best in an ACC game since 1997.
Miller, a freshman from Marysville, Mich., improved to 15-1 this fall by going 9-1 at the ITA all-American Championships this past week. Miller earned her second title of the season by winning the consolation title in the qualifying round of the tournament. She has now beaten seven ranked players this fall.
Gergen, a senior from Topeka, Kansas, helped the volleyball team to conference wins on the road this weekend against Wake Forest and Duke. Against Wake Forest, Gergen recorded 10 kills on 14 attempts to hit .714 and also had two solo blocks. The following night against Duke, Gergen posted 13 kills on 25 attempts to hit .520. For the week, Gergen did not record a hitting error and she leads the team in hitting percentage at .403.
