GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Brendon Mahoney and sophomore Chaunte Howard were named Indoor Atlantic Coast Conference Performers of the Year, announced by the league office this afternoon. Freshman Ashlee Kidd was tabbed ACC Freshman of the Year. The Georgia Tech men’s track and field team finished fifth at the conference meet, while the 20th-ranked women finished second.
The Yellow Jackets’ Brendon Mahoney earned Most Valuable Performer honors after placing first in the men’s one-mile and 800m run events. Mahoney claimed victory in the 800m for the second time in his career, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:53.77. Then the All-ACC performer notched his second victory of the championship with a win in the one-mile run. Mahoney won the race in a time of 4:12.31 to become a two-time winner in the mile.
A year removed from being honored as the ACC Freshman of the Year, Tech’s Chaunte Howard was named Co-Most Valuable Performer after posting three top-three finishes at the 2004 Indoor Championship. Howard won her second straight women’s high jump title breaking the ACC Indoor and school record with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6’2.75′ (1.90m). The jump currently stands as the best collegiate mark in the nation this year. She also placed second in the long jump with a mark of 20’1.00″ (6.12m), while finishing third in the triple jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 41’5.25″ (12.86m).
Tech’s Ashlee Kidd was named the ACC Freshman of the Year after recording a first-place and fifth-place finish in the women’s 400m and 200m dash events, respectively. In the 400m, Kidd crossed the finish line ahead of the field in a provisional qualifying time of 53.50 to win the event. She would also collect valuable points for the Yellow Jackets as she placed fifth in the 200m dash in a time of 24.27. This is the second straight Freshman of the Year honor for Georgia Tech.
