ATLANTA — Georgia Tech’s top men’s tennis doubles tandem of senior Roger Anderson and junior Scott Schnugg capped an outstanding 2003 campaign by being named as members of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division I All-America team on Monday. They become the first Yellow Jackets to garner All-America honors since current men’s and women’s head coaches Kenny Thorne and Bryan Shelton were named to the team in 1988.
“Every year it is the goal of the players at the top of our singles and doubles lineup to be named All-Americans,” said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne. “This a great accomplishment for Roger and Scott, as they represented Georgia Tech very well throughout the year. I think they proved that they were one of the top doubles team throughout the year by beating a number of ranked teams, many of which were ranked above them.”
The tandem was Tech’s top doubles team in 2003, leading the Jackets with a 13-2 dual-match record and a 14-3 overall mark. Schnugg and Anderson earned All-America recognition by virtue of their top-10 final ITA doubles ranking, finishing the year as the country’s 10th-ranked team. On the year, the duo recorded nine wins over ranked opponents, including four over teams ranked in the top 25. Both players were also named to the All-ACC team by winning the league’s flight one doubles title.
“Roger and Scott complimented each other very well on the court,” said Thorne. “It is a great accomplishment for both of them to be named All-Americans.”
As a team, the Yellow Jackets reached the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year, finishing the year with a 12-10 dual-match record and a No. 41 final ranking.
