CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Georgia Tech women’s track and field team captured its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference indoor title Saturday, outscoring nine-time defending champion North Carolina, 122-113, at Eddie Smith Field House on the UNC campus. Tech’s men placed third with 94 points, only one point behind runner-up Florida State.
The Jackets were paced by wins in the triple jump by freshman Shanta Smith, who leaped a season-best and NCAA provisional mark of 41’10.75.”, and the 4×400 meter relay team of freshman Dana Rogers, senior Nicole Campbell, junior Jessica DeFreitas and Smith, who ran a season-best time of 3:46.01.
Other Tech athletes who earned All-ACC honors on day two were sophomore Amandi Rhett, who was second in the 60-meter dash, sophomore Renee Metivier, who finished third in the 3000 meters, and senior Mishanta Reyes, who was second in the 60-meter hurdles. Reyes was also fourth in the triple jump.
Other strong performances came from Smith, who was sixth in the 400 meters, seniors Nicole Campbell and Sara Pardue, who were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 800 meters, junior Amy Dock, who was sixth in the 3000 meters, and senior Dana Hall, who was fourth in the shot put.
Senior Tosan Osaigbovo was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, while Rogers was seventh. Junior Jessica DeFreitas was seventh in the 60 meters.
As for the men, Tech was led by sophomore Brendon Mahoney, who won the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.99, and finished second in the mile, running 4:10.96. The Jackets’ 4×400 relay squad of freshman Brian Ford, senior Aaron Sink, junior Sharif Azim and junior Bryan Swarn also placed first in a time of 3:13.58.
Swarn earned all-conference accolades with a second-place finish (47.77) in the 400 meters, while Azim placed fourth and Ford sixth. Freshman Reuben Houston was second in the triple jump with a leap of 49’07.00″, while junior Chris Crawley was third. Both earned All-ACC honors.
Other solid efforts came from Dennis Davis, who was fifth in the 60-meter dash, Michael Massey, who was eighth in the high jump, and sophomore Spencer Irvine, who was eighth in the triple jump.
Tech returns to action next weekend when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet.
