Tech Women's Tennis Upends No. 22 South Carolina, 4-2

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The 37th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team continued its outstanding play and defeated its second-straight top-25 opponent with a 4-2 win on the road over 22nd-ranked South Carolina at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.

The Yellow Jackets (5-1) have now won five-straight matches since dropping their opening dual match of the year to fourth-ranked Vanderbilt. Tech dealt the Gamecocks (4-1) their first loss of the year.

South Carolina took an early lead in the match as it won the doubles point from Tech to open play on the day. The Gamecocks’ 26th-ranked tandem of Jennifer Radman and Kathy Boyanovich defeated the Jackets’ Mysti Morris and Sekita Grant at the No. 1 spot by an 8-4 score, while 36th-ranked Lynn-Yin Tan and Jodi Kenoyer downed Tech’s Jaime Wong and Laura Ozolins by an 8-6 count at No. 2. The final doubles match saw Markovski and Brown defeat Mason Miller and Catherine Gunn, 8-6.

Tech would get things rolling in singles action however, winning four of the five completed matches on the day. Morris continued to be a force for the Jackets at the No. 1 spot, defeating 71st-ranked Jennifer Radman in three sets by a 3-6, 7-5, 7-2 (2) score. Catherine Gunn kept her perfect dual-match record in tact when she defeated Boyanovich at No. 3 singles in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

Sophomore Sekita Grant was victorious at No. 5 singles, downing Tamara Sutton in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-3, while Laura Ozolins was also a winner in straight sets over 108th ranked Jodi Kenoyer by a 6-3, 6-2 count. South Carolina’s lone singles win came at No. 4 as Lynn-Yin Tan defeated Mason Miller by a 6-2, 6-0 score. The match between Jaime Wong and Katarina Markovski at No. 2 was suspended when the Jackets clinched the match with the score even at a set a apiece, 6-0, 4-6.

Georgia Tech will return to action on Sunday when it faces 39th-ranked Harvard in a match that will take place at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. beginning at 1 p.m.
