Tech Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season Against Georgia State

Jan. 28, 2003

ATLANTA – The 17th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will open its dual-match season on Wednesday when it hosts cross-town rival Georgia State in a match that will begin at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets open the spring season with their highest ranking in school history with the 17th spot in the preseason poll. The Panthers (0-1) will be playing their second match of the year after a 7-0 loss to Alabama to open the year.

Senior Jaime Wong, who is the nation’s 33rd-ranked singles player in the preseason after an outstanding 2002 campaign and solid fall season, will lead Tech. Last season, Wong became the first Yellow Jacket to advance to the NCAA Singles Championship. In the fall of 2002-03, Wong recorded a 12-3 record, which included a six-match unbeaten streak to open the year. Wong is also ranked 27th in doubles with fellow senior Mysti Morris. The duo finished the fall with a 9-3 record with wins over a pair of top-30 opponents.

Following Wong in the lineup will likely be sophomore Catherine Gunn, who is 59th in the preseason poll. Gunn finished the opening half of the year with a 9-6 record in singles play and a 7-4 mark in doubles action. Along with doubles partner Maria Nieto, Gunn is ranked 51st in the preseason doubles rankings. The duo recorded a win over 12th-ranked Lindsay Dawaf and Julie Rotondi of Florida during the fall season.

Senior Mysti Morris is the third Yellow Jacket currently ranked in the preseason poll, as she went 11-5 in the fall and is 115th in the opening poll of the year, winning four of her last five matches. Morris is also 27th in the doubles rankings with partner Jaime Wong.

The Jackets will likely have a number of newcomers in the lineup to open the season, including freshman Kelly Anderson, who joined the team following the fall semester. Anderson is a native of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and is the younger sister of Tech men’s tennis standout Roger Anderson. The remaining members of Tech’s rookie class, Annelies Schenk and Lyndsay Shosho will also be looked to for immediate contributions this spring.
