March 14, 2004

ATLANTA – Lyndsay Shosho led Georgia Tech (8-4) to a sweep of singles play and a 7-0 win over visiting Ohio State (6-5) Sunday afternoon on the outdoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Shosho began the afternoon with a 6-1 win in her first set at the top of the singles lineup against Ohio State’s Lindsay Williams but then dropped the second by a 6-3 mark. She came back in the final set with a win in the tiebreaker third set, 7-6 (5).

The Jackets’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant began the afternoon with a quick 40-minute win over the Buckeyes’ Erica Fish and Jackie Leskovar, 8-0. Ohio State’s No. 3 doubles duo, Lindsey Adams and Meredith Vincent, secured an 8-5 victory against Tech’s Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio to set the No. 2 slot up to decide the winner of the doubles point. Trailing 6-5, the Jackets’ Maria Nieto and Lyndsay Shosho won three consecutive games to earn an 8-6 win over OSU’s Williams and Meaghan Colville to give Tech a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Anderson, Silverio, Lindsey Stauss, Grant and Nieto concluded singles play with straight-set victories in their singles matches for the Yellow Jackets. Anderson downed State’s Emily DeCamilla at No. 2 singles, 7-6(4), 6-0 while Silverio defeated OSU’s Fisk, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 3 position. The Jackets’ Stauss dropped the Buckeyes’ Lescovar, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot and State’s Lindsey Adams lost at No. 5 singles to Grant, 6-2, 7-5. Nieto and Kristin Messmer concluded the afternoon with back-to-back tiebreaker sets, with Nieto pulling out the victory, 7-6(0), 7-6 (11).

“I’m really proud of our team,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton, “we had a great week and improved a lot in the two matches that we played. I’m very please with where we are at, but I want us to keep getting better. We have a big match this coming Friday and we’re going to have to come after them to earn a victory.”

The Jackets return to action when they host fourth-ranked Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Friday on the outdoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center, weather permitting.
