Tech Women's Swimming and Diving Enjoys Strong Opening Session at ACC Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Led by lifetime bests by many of its swimmers, the Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team posted a strong preliminary session Thursday at the 2002 ACC Championships, held at the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. Finals begin tonight at 7 p.m.

Freshman Cara DeVinny had the top finish of the afternoon, placing fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in a school record and NCAA “B” cut time of 2:04.27. She will advance to tonight’s final in that event, while Lisa Hancock moves on the consolation final with a lifetime-best mark of 2:06.93 and a 12th-place finish. Ashley Skala placed 24th and will compete in the bonus consolation final in the same event.

In the 500 free, Michelle Maguire swam a lifetime-best and school record time of 4:58.74, placing 18th. She also moves on to tonight’s bonus consolation final. Ann Battle swam a lifetime-best of 5:09.10 to finish 33rd.

Freshman Moeko Wallis posted a lifetime-best and school record mark of 23.91 in the 50 free, which places her in tonight’s bonus consolation final. Other strong swims in the 50 came from Sara Gilli, Jaclyn Keys and Jennifer Christenson. All posted season-best swims.

Action resumes at 7 p.m. tonight, with the top 16 finishers in each event scoring points.
