ATLANTA-Eleven student-athletes from the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team spent an evening volunteering at the Atlanta Union Mission’s women’s and children’s shelter a week ago.
This particular Atlanta Union Mission site serves as a homeless shelter and a personal development program in the Atlanta area. It houses more than 130 women and children on the shelter wing while there are 128 beds available in the development program area that serves women dealing with life issues such as drug and/or alcohol dependency and battery. Construction of the site began in October of 2002 and concluded in May of 2003 with the help of several independent and corporate donations.
The Yellow Jackets were given a tour of both sites upon their arrival Tuesday afternoon and were instructed as to the daily activities in both areas. They had a chance to visit the children in the development program and sit down with the volunteer coordinator prior to serving the tenants of the mission to ask questions about funding, volunteer opportunities, and activities that the women are a part of. After the discussion, the basketball players returned to the kitchen area where they served approximately 200 women and children their meals and then helped to clean up the kitchen and dining area before returning to campus.
