Tech Women Tie for First; Men Third at UTC Cross Country Meet

ATLANTA, GA. (Sept. 10) – Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 1999 season Friday at the Tennessee-Chattanooga Open, as the women’s squad tied for first place and the men’s team placed third.

Junior Sara Pardue (Aurora, Colo.) was sixth in the 2-mile run in 11:56 to pace the women’s team, which tied Auburn for first place. Senior Tina Frey (Peachtree City, Ga.) was 10th in 12:08, freshman Amy Dock (Charlotte, N.C.) was 12th in 12:15 and freshman Aenslee Tanner (Portsmouth, N.H.) was 18th in 12:25. Tech and Auburn each tied with 65 points, Tennessee-Chattanooga was third with 66 points, Samford was fourth with 73 points and Western Kentucky rounded out the top five with 110 points.

The men’s team placed third with 89 points as senior Brad Mills (Toledo, Ohio) was sixth in a time of 15:35 in the 5K race. Junior Joey Zins (Atlanta, Ga.) was 13th in 15:52, senior Giovanni Pipia (Acworth, Ga.) was 21st in the 16:15 and senior Brent Williams (Farmington, Mo.) was 23rd in 16:16. Tennessee-Chattanooga won with the low score of 51 points, Western Kentucky was second with 61 points, Samford was fourth with 104 points and Troy State concluded the top five with 107 points.

Tech is next in action on Sept. 18 at the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
