Tech Women Sweep Singles and Doubles Titles at Baylor Invitational

Sept. 19, 2004

Waco, Tex. – Led by freshman Kristi Miller, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team captured the singles and doubles titles at the Baylor Invitational Sunday afternoon. A native of Marysville, Mich., Miller concluded the weekend with a perfect 6-0 record in singles play, including defeating four seeded players, to capture her first tournament title as a collegian.

Miller opened Sunday’s play by defeating Baylor’s Klara Zrustova in semifinal action, 6-3, 6-1, before capturing the singles championship against the fourth-seeded Carolin Walter of Baylor, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 in the afternoon session.

“Kristi really had a terrific weekend,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “She played well in singles and also very well in doubles and I think that if she had to draw up her first collegiate tournament this was what she would have hoped to have done. She played great, played extremely well and for a freshman to enter her first collegiate tournament playing so strong, I think it says a lot about the talent that we have on this team. She had great wins against a tough draw and really made the most of it each day.”

An all-Georgia Tech doubles final was set up Saturday afternoon when Kacie Anson and Dasha Potapova won an 8-5 match against Texas’ Courtney Zauft and Ristine Olson and Miller combined with Alison Silverio to down TCU’s duo of Helena Besovic and Karla Mancinas, 8-6. Due to time restraints resulting from Miller’s singles final, the match will be contested this coming Thursday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Entering the final match, Anson and Potapova are 3-0 in doubles play, while Miller and Silverio are 4-0.

“Alison and Kristi played terrific doubles together, as did the rest of our team, and making it to the finals against Dasha and Kacie couuldn’t have made me happier,” said Shelton. “Our doubles teams all played very strong this weekend, including Alison and Kristi recording a victory over the No. 1 team in the nation, and seeing the young players coming in and playing so well really adds to the confidence of our team.”

Potapova captured the singles championship in the Green Back Draw by defeating teammate Lindsey Stauss, 6-3, 6-1 Sunday morning. Potapova began the day by downing her former Baylor teammate Daniela Covello, 6-1, 6-1, while Stauss disposed of Arizona’s Stephanie Balzert, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 to advance to the final against Potapova. Stauss finished tournament play with a 4-2 record in singles play, and Potapova concluded the weekend at 3-1.

Kelly Anderson matched up with Balzert in doubles competition and the duo captured the Doubles Consolation Championship by defeating Stauss and Lyndsay Shosho in the consolation semifinals before Rice’s Blair DiSesa and Kimberly Patenaude withdrew from the finals due to injury. Anderson concluded the tournament at 5-1 in doubles action and also posted a 2-1 mark in singles play while Shosho and Stauss finished with a 1-2 doubles record.

“Overall I was very pleased with the way that our team competed this weekend,” Shelton said. “We got everything that we wanted out of the weekend, including good matches in both singles and doubles and valuable experience. We gained a lot of confidence as a team and have found things that we need to work on over the next few months leading into the dual-match season in the spring, but overall I am very pleased with our start.”

After Thursday’s doubles championship match, the Yellow Jackets will prepare for the All-American Championships, which will begin October 2nd.
