Yellow Jackets Host Cavaliers Thursday

Georgia Tech will return home to face the Virginia Cavaliers in the first of four remaining home games on the Jackets’ ACC schedule. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Georgia Tech’s campus. Virginia is coming off three straight victories, the most recent being a 52-45 non-conference win at Georgetown Sunday. Tech has lost three consecutive contests, including an 81-41 defeat at Duke Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on WREK-Radio 91.1 FM in Atlanta and online at www.wrek.org, with Richard Musterer calling the play-by-play and Kurt Hoyt providing the color analysis. Virginia will broadcast on WINA-AM 1070 in Charlottesville, with Jed Williams providing the play-by-play call while Jay James handles the color commentary duties. Series Notes

* Virginia holds a 47-7 lead in the series versus the Yellow Jackets, and are 17-6 against Tech at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The first victory over the Cavaliers at AMC came in 1983, when the Jackets took away a close 55-54 win, while Tech’s last victory in the series came in Atlanta when the Jackets’ downed UVa, 92-61 in 2002.

* Tech heads into the game looking to end a five -game losing skid to the Wahoos. The Jackets have lost by a combined 22 points in the five games since their last victory, including a pair of losses by just two points and the most recent defeat by one at University Hall earlier this season. The largest margin of victory for the ‘Hoos was 11 points on Virginia’s home court in the first game between the two teams last season, 74-63. Fallon Stokes led all scorers with 15 points in the contest as four Georgia Tech players scored in double figures. The Cavaliers were led by Brandi Teamer, who turned in a 14-point performance, while three other Virginia players recorded double-figures in the scoring column.

* The longest winning streak that Tech has had against the Cavaliers was three games, from January, 2001 through the following January. The longest losing streak was 18 games, dating from December, 1989 – January, 1997.

* The first game between these two teams was on November 24, 1979, with Virginia winning at home by an 85-44 score.

Jackets vs. Virginia: Last Time Out

Latonya Blue hit a pair of free throws with just over five seconds remaining to help Virginia to a 60-59 victory over Georgia Tech at University Hall on January 12, 2004. Fallon Stokes led Georgia Tech with a season-high 26 points as the only Yellow Jacket to record double-figure points. Following Stokes in the scoring column was freshman Kentrina Wilson, with eight points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. With 2:02 remaining on the clock, Stokes collected her fifth foul and the Jackets wouldn’t score another basket in the contest. With under a minute remaining, Grant-Fairley and Blue hit both free throws to put the Cavs ahead by one. Tech drove the lane following Blue’s makes at the charity stripe, but Alex Stewart’s layup spun off the rim at the buzzer. The game was close in all categories, with the Jackets and Cavaliers each shooting 39 percent from the field in the game, Virginia holding a 35-34 edge in rebounding, Tech turning the ball over just two more times than the Cavs, and the Hoos blocking only one more shot than the Jackets. Kate Kreager, Jocelyn Logan-Friend, and Grant-Fairley each scored 11 points to lead Virginia to the win, with Logan-Friend pulling down eight rebounds and Kreager, seven.

Tech Record Book Versus Virginia

* Tech’s 92-61 victory over Virginia on January 10, 2002 marked the second-largest ACC win ever in Yellow Jackets history.

* The ‘Hoos and Jackets had the most combined points scored in an ACC game that Tech was a part of when Virginia defeated Georgia Tech 98-94 in Charlottesville on February 2, 1991.

* Georgia Tech hit eight-of-nine from beyond the arc for an .889 percentage against the Cavs on January 21, 1989, which set the record for the highest three-point field goal percentage in Yellow Jackets history, a mark that still stands today.

Looking at the Cavaliers

Virginia took a break from its conference schedule to meet Georgetown in its last time out, and downed the Hoyas by a 52-45 score. Brandi Teamer led the Cavs with 10 points in the contest while LaTonya Blue pulled down 11 rebounds against the Hoyas. The Cavaliers come into the contest owning a three-game winning streak with wins over Wake Forest, Maryland and the Hoyas. Teamer leads the Wahoos in scoring this season, averaging 12.2 points per game, including 13.4 per conference contest. At the top of the rebounding and assist categories for UVa is Blue, who this season, is averaging 6.0 rebounds per contest (6.8 per ACC game), and has dished 82 assists in 21 games played. Blue also averages 9.4 points (9.9 in ACC) per game, which is second on the Virginia team. Anna Prillaman is one of the top three-point threats in the ACC, as she has hit 43 from beyond the arc (.413 average) this season. Overall, Virginia is shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 70.4 percent from the free throw line, and are averaging 37.4 rebounds per contest. The Cavs have employed several different starting lineups, as no players have earned a start in every game this season. Prillaman leads the team with 21 starts in 22 contests this season, while Blue has 17 and Kate Kreager, 16, for the Cavaliers.

Last Time Out for the Jackets

Vicki Krapohl scored 18 points on six three-pointers to help No. 2 Duke beat Georgia Tech for the 23rd straight time, 81-41 Saturday, February 7. Monique Currie tied the Duke school record for assists with 12 after getting 11 by halftime. Alana Beard scored 15 points, Brittany Hunter had 14 and Jessica Foley added 11 for the Blue Devils, who rebounded from an 80-74 loss to Florida State on Wednesday. Krapohl, a senior, led Duke in scoring for the first time in the 113 games she has played. She scored 15 first-half points, and Duke led 49-16 at halftime. Fallon Stokes scored 15 to lead Georgia Tech, as the Jackets lost their third consecutive game. Georgia Tech made a season-low 14 field goals on 47 attempts (29.8 percent). The Yellow Jackets shot worse only once this season, hitting 29 percent against Davidson.
