Tech Women Lead After Day One of Indoor ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – All-American sophomore Chaunte Howard defended her Atlantic Coast Conference championship in the high jump with an ACC and school record mark of 6’2.75″ tonight at the Indoor ACC Championships in the Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility. Howard tallied a runner-up finish in the long jump with a personal-record jump of 20’1.00″ for her second All-ACC honor of the evening. The 20th-ranked Yellow Jacket women tallied 38 points through six events and hold the lead over Florida State (31 pts.). The Tech men’s track and field team currently stands fifth (19 pts.) heading into the final day of competition on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Also earning all-conference honors for the Yellow Jackets was senior Kyle Rabbitt, juniors Holt McPherson and Zeb Sion and sophomore Lauren Reimer. Rabbitt finished third in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:38.10. McPherson tallied a jump of 23’10.25″ in the long jump to finish third, while Sion finished third in the shot put with a toss of 58’0.25″. Reimer posted a score of 3,659 points in the pentathlon to finish second for the Jackets.

Other Yellow Jackets posting top-eight finishes at the indoor ACC meet for the Rambling Wreck were juniors Jonathan Spillman and Greg McCormick, along with sophomores Andriane Lapsley, Brandy Depland, Alex Van Heuven and Reimer.

Depland and Lapsley finished fifth and sixth in the long jump for Tech with marks of 19’6.00″ and 19’2.50″, respectively.

Van Heuven tallied a sixth-place finish in the women’s pentathlon with a score of 3,430, while McCormick finished seventh in the men’s pentathlon with a score of 2,719.

In the shot put, Reimer finished seventh with a toss of 43’3.75″ and Spillman finished eighth with a mark of 51’9.25″.

Nine Yellow Jackets qualified for the finals tomorrow in the running events. Senior Amandi Rhett finished with a qualifying time of 7.47 in the 60-meter dash. Lapsley also qualified in the 60m with a personal-record time of 7.52. Lapsley also posted a qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.

Junior Dana Rogers registered a qualifying mark in the 60mH with a NCAA provisional time of 8.58. Junior Montrell Person also qualified for Tech in the 60mH with a time of 7.98.

In the 200 meters, freshman Ashlee Kidd and Person moved on to the finals tomorrow. Kidd finished with a time of 24.14, while Person finished with a Tech season-best time of 21.93. Kidd also posted a qualifying time of 54.63 in the 400 meters for the Jackets.

Leading the way for Tech in the 800 metes was seniors Brendon Mahoney, Barton Crist and Jennifer Lentz, along with freshman Jennifer Sims. Mahoney finished the 800m with a time of 1:54.72 and Crist finished with a personal-record time of 1:54.22 to qualify for the finals on Saturday. Lentz and Sims moved on to tomorrow’s finals with times of 2:15.43 and 2:16.20, respectively.

Mahoney and junior Neil McDonagh both qualified for the finals in the mile with times of 4:13.55 and 4:12.23, respectively.

The Indoor ACC Championships will conclude tomorrow at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility.
