Tech Women Host Cross-Town Rival Georgia State Sunday

Feb. 21, 2004

ATLANTA – Coming off a 5-2 win over Auburn Thursday, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will host cross-town rival Georgia State Sunday at 12 noon on the outdoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center. State enters the contest with a 3-2 record while the Jackets stand at 3-2 this spring.

“We’re expecting a pretty tough match,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We had a couple of tough matches against their top two girls this previous fall and I know that, at the top of their lineup, they are always strong. I think the coach there is doing a good job of building a good program, as they are much improved from the time that I started coaching here four and a half years ago, so I know that it will be a stronger test than in years past.”

A pair of underclassmen in Lyndsay Shosho and Alison Silverio lead the Jackets at the top of the singles lineup and they have earned two and three wins, respectively, this dual-match season. Also posting singles victories this season are sophomore Kelly Anderson, ranked 99th in the country and freshman Lindsey Stauss, as Anderson has earned three wins this spring while Stauss stands at 4-1. Rounding out the singles lineup is a combination of seniors Maria Nieto and Sekita Grant and sophomore Kacie Anson. Nieto dropped her first match of the season in the Jackets last match, as she was forced to withdraw due to injury in the second set. Grant stands at 2-2 this spring while Anson has a 1-0 singles record.

The Jackets have gone with multiple combinations in the doubles lineup, but have earned the doubles points in four of five matches this spring, and have posted a 3-1 record when taking that point.

“Like the match against Auburn, we have to come out ready to go because Georgia State can sneak up on you in a hurry,” said Shelton. “We’ll be prepared for the match and we’re looking to add on to what we did in the past match against the Tigers. Hopefully we’ll get some good weather so that we can play outdoors again before we head out to California next weekend.”

Following the match against Georgia State, the Jackets will take a week off before taking off for California for a pair of matches against No. 29 San Diego State and No. 43 Pepperdine.
