ATLANTA – Coming off back-to-back 5-2 wins over Auburn and Georgia State at home this week, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will travel west to face 34th-ranked San Diego State and No. 29 Pepperdine this weekend. The Jackets and Aztecs of SDSU will square off Saturday at 3 p.m. ET while Tech plays Pepperdine Tuesday in a match that is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
“This is really two great opportunities for us,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. We begin with San Diego State on Sunday, and last time we were there (two years ago), we squeaked away with a victory with Jaime Wong clinching the match for us just before it became dark, so I think we’ve got some good memories of that match. We’re looking forward to getting back out there and seeing if we can get the job done again. I think our team is ready to play, and we’re looking forward to being outside, hopefully getting some good weather and really performing well these next two matches against San Diego State and Pepperdine. They are two quality programs and great schools, and we are definitely going to have our work cut out for us.”
The Jackets are lead the season by senior Maria Nieto and freshman Lindsey Stauss, both of whom stand 5-1 in singles dual match play. Stauss has also teamed with fellow freshman Alison Silverio much of the spring in doubles, and the girls have four wins to their credit while Nieto and doubles partner Lyndsay Shosho have also contributed four victories for the Yellow Jackets.
Standing at 4-2 singles are sophomore Kelly Anderson and senior Sekita Grant, and the two have teamed together for four doubles dual matches. Silverio and Shosho each stand at 3-3 in singles play and Kacie Anson is 1-1 in dual matches, teaming with Silverio and Anderson this spring.
Following the matches out west, the Jackets will return home for a nine-match home-stand which includes eight teams in the top 60 of the ITA Rankings, including three in the top 15. The home matches begin March 6 with No. 42 Wake Forest at 12 noon.
