Tech Traveling to South Bend for Meyo Invitational

Jan. 31, 2007

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invitational, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3, on the campus of Notre Dame. The meet is slated to begin with the men’s and women’s long jump on Friday at 5 p.m.

“The Meyo Invitational is one of the top indoor meets that we attend each year,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Notre Dame has a great facility and it will be a very competitive field. We are anxious to line up and compete well at this competition.”

“The Meyo Invitational is one of the premier meets of the indoor season and the facility offers a fantastic opportunity for everyone to perform at the highest possible levels,” added women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “The track surface and size, 5 laps to a mile, is excellent for sprinting, hurdling, and distance events. The runways for the jumps are also outstanding.”

The women, who are currently ranked 16th nationally by Trackwire.com and 20th by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches of America, are led by Ashlee Kidd. The senior has run NCAA provisional times in both the 200- (23.44) and 400-meter (53.22) dash. Junior Shantia Moss has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 8.17 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.

“The team has been training hard,” said Drosky. “We have had a few injuries that have slowed us a bit, but we’re looking at this weekend’s meet to get the entire team together going full-steam. Our national rankings are indicative that we are a good national team, but over the next few weeks we want to become a good conference team, and that means solid depth of performances.”

The men’s squad is led by NCAA provisional qualifier Jerome Miller. The junior set a school- and personal-record in the high jump, clearing the bar at 7 feet, 2 ½ inches at the Clemson Opener. Sophomore Charles Rohling set a new personal-best mark of 54 feet, 2 inches in the men’s weight throw last weekend at the Diet Pepsi Invitational.

Complete results will be posted at the end of the day’s events on the official Georgia Tech website (www.ramblinwreck.com).
