ATLANTA – For their first meet of the indoor season the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel up I-85 to Clemson, S.C. for the Orange and Purple Winter Classic. The meet will take place at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex and will kick off at 11 a.m. with the shot put.
Twenty athletes from the women’s team and 16 athletes from the men’s team will make the trip to compete in a variety of categories.
Many different colleges from the Southeast will be involved in the meet.
The day will begin with the shot put at 11 a.m. followed by the weight throw. At Noon, the long jump, pole vault and high jump will kick off. On the track side of things, the day will begin at 12:30 with the 1,000 meter run followed by the 60 meter high hurdles at 1:10, the 60 meter dash at 1:40, the 500 meter dash at 2:10, the finals of the 60 meter dash and 60 meter high hurdles at 3:50, the 300 meter dash at 3:30, the mile at 4:30 and the day will conclude as usual with the 4×400 meter relay at 4:55.
Tech will have athletes in each of the track events, as Jade Sims and Jamie Van Tassell will compete in the women’s mile while Adonis Gaines, Brandon Lasater and Rick Scheff compete on the men’s side. Melanie Akwule, Jasmine Kent, Paul DeVito and Glenn Powell will tackle the 60 meter high hurdles while Julienne McKee, Kenya Scott, Perron Jones, Michael Sims and William White participate in the 60 meter dash.
The 500 meter dash will see action by Jasmine Isley, Ama Larbi, and Christina Pensock. The 300-meter dash will see newcomers Alex Braxton, Stephanie Kalu and Jamillan Middlebrooks on the women’s side and Jones and White on the men’s side. Rachel Grosz, Scott Greer, Justin Weaver and Jeremy Wegener will take on the mile.
In the field events, Jasmine Bush, Leslie Njoku, Monique Pate, Bianca Stewart, Mykhail Chambers and Brandon Mbaba will participate in the high jump; Bush, Jasmine Kent, McKee, Jhanelle McLeod and Jonathan Gardner will compete in the long jump; Pate will toss the shot put; and Samantha Becker, Erica Penk, Nikita Kirillov and Aaron Unterberger will all take part in the pole vault.
